  • Illustration for Personal Work Experiment

One thing I regularly come across when speaking to fellow designers or illustrators is the how we have all somehow slipped from giving ourself time to just kick back, have some 'me' time and create something purely for fun.

After all when we were growing up and deciding that art and design was our primary interest, we'd all spend time sitting in our rooms, with nothing but paints, pens, pencils and a whole host of other materials just making pictures for ourselves. Its essential that we still do this, we need to have that time where there are no reasons for creating something other than our own need to experiment.

With this is mind, I sat down today, fired up photoshop and set to work doodling and mucking around on an image Ive had in my head for a while. And here it is!

Photoshop Illustration

When you work as a designer, it's inevitable that you collect images, normally in a folder on your desktop with the idea that 'one day' you will get round to composing an image with all of it. I was reading through some blogs just this morning, they were all artists blogs and it inspired me to stop work for the day and give myself the time to play.

Photoshop is such a fantastic piece of software that within an hour you can lay down some layers, play with some colourways and start knocking together that inkling of a sketch in your head into something viable and, more importantly, visible on screen

Green texture, a photograph of a window, some old rusty ladder and a Doll

That's quite literally what I had in my folder. That and a head full of madness that I needed to get out on screen so I could stop that itch I needed to scratch. Thats how it is you know. You just NEED to do it and sometimes it's more beneficial to just start it up. I'm as big a fan of 'just doing' as I am of turning the computer off, take a long walk with the dog or the kids and free your mind from the daiuly routines of coding websites, solving problems and having the phone ringing 12 hours a day!
